According to a new report released by the United States Department of Labor, the number of construction workers killed on construction sites rose 5 percent in 2012, from 738 to 775. The Department of Labor has deemed the construction industry the “deadliest industry in the United States.” Falls, slips, and trips remain a construction worker’s worst enemy: in 2012, 280 construction workers died from a workplace fall, slip, or trip, which represented over a third of all construction related deaths. The remaining categories of construction deaths are transportation incidents (216), traumatic contact with on-site objects or equipment (135), and exposure to harmful substances or environments (102). Looking for a workers compensation lawyer?

From our vast experience in construction cases, we know employees in the construction industry work from great heights every day, and falls are very common. Therefore, it is critical to make sure your employer provides the safety equipment you need to protect yourself from falls, by tying-off or using a horizontal lifeline, if working from heights greater than seven feet. In addition, you must always report an unsafe work environment if your employer does not provide you with a safe environment to work from heights.

Oversized Babies Pose Higher Risks : Chicago Birth Injury Attorneys

Malpractice lawyers in Chicago know that birth injuries are among the most devastating types of injuries that can occur. Birth injuries generally have two primary causes: hypoxia (deprivation of oxygen) or trauma. Unfortunately, the larger a baby is, the more likely it is that the baby and mother will be harmed during the labor process. As such, a recent trend in big babies has medical professionals concerned and is something that doctors need to be aware of and respond to properly. hands-1402625-m

Oversized Babies Increase the Risk of Birth Injuries

According to NBC News Health,  a growing number of infants are far larger than the standard at birth.  Just this summer alone, mothers gave birth to a 13.5 pound German baby girl, a 13-pound, 10-ounce California baby and a 13-pound, 11-ounce little girl born in Spain.

The increase in big babies may be explained by two risk factors: (1) later-in-life births, increasing the number of mothers with gestational diabetes, and (2) rising rates of obesity, resulting in more obese mothers giving birth.  These conditions have resulted in a 15 to 25 percent increase in babies weighing more than eight pounds, 13 ounces, in developed countries.  A baby larger than this weight is generally considered oversized.

As more big babies are born, there is a greater chance of birth injuries occurring due to the inherent difficulties in birthing an oversized child.  A larger baby, for example, is at risk of shoulder dystocia and bone fractures.  Shoulder dystocia happens when the baby becomes lodged behind the mother’s pubic bone.

Doctors have to act quickly to extract the baby to minimize the risk of fetal distress and oxygen deprivation.

Young Drivers Pressured to Buy Cheaper & More Dangerous Cars By Auto Insurance Costs – Article 415

Our Las Vegas car accident attorneys know that car insurers set premiums based on how likely it is that a driver will be involved in an auto accident. Since accident statistics show that younger drivers are more likely to be involved in a crash than older drivers, car insurance is more expensive for teen drivers than for their adult counterparts.

Unfortunately, the high cost of auto insurance for teen drivers puts young people in a tough spot. Many feel that they have to buy less expensive cars, in large part because of the high insurance costs on the vehicles. These cheaper cars are usually older and can sometimes be less safe than newer and better cars with improved safety and accident avoidance features.

Car Accident Risks Increased by Insurance Company Prices

The Mail Online recently addressed the problems faced by teen drivers resulting from costly auto insurance. A new survey conducted by Alfa Romeo and Marmalade (a car insurer) revealed that around half of all new young drivers felt forced to buy a less advanced and less expensive car because of their auto insurance costs.

Auto insurance is very expensive for young drivers, with the Mail reporting that the average insurance premium is at an all-time high for women between the ages of 17 and 20. While premiums have fallen somewhat in Europe for young men due to the EU gender ruling mandating that gender cannot be taken into account when pricing insurance, young men in the United States usually pay more than young women for car insurance because they are considered to be riskier drivers.
